Women March through Boston in Force!

The Women's Caucus of Occupy Boston and allies marching through Chinatown.

“Whatever we wear, Wherever we go, Yes means Yes, No means No!” – “Consent in the sheets, Dissent in the streets!” – “We are unstoppable, another world is possible!” These are the words that rang in the streets today as the Women’s Caucus and their allies marched through Boston. The march that began at 12:30pm was  joined by local organizations representing women, people of color and other marginalized individuals in a powerful march beginning at Dewey Square.

The march stopped at the center of Fanueil Hall, where several women were given an opportunity to speak out about such issues as poverty, job and employment opportunities, healthcare, housing, reproductive rights, and LGBT rights.

Afterwards, the march resumed, meandering it’s way through the city until finally reaching Dewey Square where it started. From 2pm until 4pm, Spoken Word/Music then began at the GA Stage featuring the likes of poet Idalia, writer-playwright Gemma Cooper-Novack, and musician Lauren DeRose.

Join Occupy Boston in Protecting Free Speech and Peaceful Assembly at Dewey Square

On November 16th Occupy Boston appealed to the courts to protect our right to maintain our tent city.  During the first hearing on the 16th Occupy Boston won a temporary injunction banning the city police from evicting the camp. “Given what is happening nationally, with municipalities shutting the protests down, it seemed important to seek the intervention of a court before the same thing happened in Boston,” said Howard Cooper, a lawyer representing the protesters, as quoted by Boston.com.

However, despite a court run mediation session, where 3 people from Occupy Boston and the city officials met to discuss possible solutions, there is now a final hearing planned for Thursday, December 1st at Suffolk County Superior Court, 3 Pemberton Square #13, Boston. This final meeting will determine whether or not the Occupy Boston presence in Dewey Square is in fact protected under the first amendment, and spells the final legal decision passed down by the state courts, and could result in the court required removal of our protest here in Boston.

Dewey Square is on state owned land overseen by the Rose F. Kennedy Greenway and the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.  We see it as Free Speech Issue, closing down the encampment at Dewey Square means closing down free speech on public land. We hope that all of those getting this invitation will come down to Suffolk County Superior Courthouse in support of Occupy Boston.  We are asking for our supporters be at the courthouse at 8:30 AM for a 9:00 hearing.  If you are planning to be outside, feel free to have polite signs and please remember to dress warmly.  Signs are not allowed in the courthouse, and we ask you to refrain from bringing them inside.

What to do: Join us Thursday, Dec 1st at Suffolk County Superior Court, 3 Pemberton Square #13, Boston at 8:30 AM (hearing starts at 9:00 AM)

Bring your Occupy Boston Buttons and T-shirts to show your support!

    11/29 General Assembly Tonight (7PM)

Very important GA tonight at 7:00pm on the main stage at Dewey Sq for our General Assembly. There is a very high chance of rain (90%!) so bring your umbrellas and get ready to mic check (mic check!).

We have a ton of proposals on the table — some urgent, all really important. Safety will be asking for more fire extinguishers, Media for emergency equipment, Ideas is bringing a refined statement of purpose, and more!

This is a crazy week and there’s so much to get done, so I hope you’ll come out and stay through the end so we can keep quorum and get things done!

Dec. 5-9: Take Back the Capitol!

Join thousands of 99%-ers who are coming to Washington, DC December 5-9 to take back the Capitol from corporate control.

December is a big month in Washington. Congress is set to deliberate the extension of unemployment benefits for more than 2 million people – and the Super-Committee is discussing devastating cuts that could destroy millions of jobs. We can have a real impact!

It’s time for the 99% to be a visible, peaceful presence on Capitol Hill. By day we’ll show up at Congressional hearings and the offices of K Street lobbyists, and by night we’ll crash in church auditoriums, union halls, and in tents around the Capitol.

It’s not a luxury trip, but meals, housing and transportation will be provided.

Our goal: to remind Congress they represent ALL Americans – not just the richest 1%!

    WHEN

The Bus from BOSTON will depart on Monday, December 5 at 8:30 AM and will return on Friday, December 9, 2011.

    WHERE

    • The People’s Action Center (aka Lower Senate Park, near C St. and New Jersey Ave., NW) will be the daytime hub for activities in the Capitol and its surrounding congressional office buildings.
    • The People’s Camp on the mall (near 14th St. and Constitution Ave., NW) will serve as our home base where we pitch our tents, get food and refreshments, and enjoy teach-ins, seminars, music, and other entertainment.

    WHAT

Thousands will converge on the nation’s capital to show Congress what democracy looks like, shine a light on corporate greed and the human suffering it has caused, and demand justice for the 99%. For four days we’ll hold spirited but peaceful actions, speak-outs, and protests—from the halls of the Capitol to the offices on K Street—as well as spend time together learning and sharing stories, ideas, and inspiration.

    A few highlights:

    • Monday, December 5 – Set up the People’s Camp. After checking in, pitching tents, and creating signs and banners, an orientation, dinner, and entertainment will be hosted by OurDC, a local organization of unemployed and underemployed 99%-ers.
    • Tuesday, December 6 – Take Back the People’s House. From the People’s Action Center, we’ll form groups and fan out to congressional offices, remind members of Congress that the Capitol is the People’s House, and demand that they represent the 99%.
    • Wednesday, December 7- “Make Wall Street Pay.” We’ll swarm K Street, the lobbying center for the world’s most powerful corporations, and track down those responsible for crashing the economy and causing millions of 99%ers to lose their jobs and homes—while failing to pay their fair share of taxes.
    • Thursday, December 8 – Demand Justice for the 99%. The day’s events will include multiple speak-outs throughout the Capitol, a national prayer vigil with unemployed folks and faith leaders, a mass march on key congressional leaders, and a lively jubilee action.
    • Friday, December 9 – Take It Home. We’ll pack it up and head home, where we need to keep the pressure on our representatives in Congress to do right by the 99%.

Occupy Boston’s Two-Month Anniversary March, November 30 at 5:30 pm!

Join us down in Dewey Square on Wednesday night at 5:30 for a rally and march celebrating 2 months of occupation! We need strength in numbers now more than ever as we deal with legal proceedings the following morning at 9am in the Suffolk County Superior Court. Our impending eviction has only been postponed thus far, and failure to obtain an extension of our restraining order will put us at risk of being shut down as early as Thursday evening.

Whether or not you are able to risk arrest, you are still a critical part of the actions being planned to peacefully resist eviction, including a 24 hour free-speech vigil that will begin in the event we are denied a stay and continue indefinitely. PLEASE come out and show your support for Occupy Boston as we fight for the right to hold this space as a first amendment right, and continue to contact state and local representatives and officials to express your concerns!
