    Another world is possible
  • One Year Later: Four Quick Reminders from CASEJ

Four reminders from some of the organizers in the Occupy Boston CASEJ (Climate Action, Sustainability and Environmental Justice) working group:

    1. Research now indicates climate change is the key culprit behind several of the most devastating droughts and heat waves we have already experienced.

“we can state, with a high degree of confidence, that the extreme anomalies such as those in Texas and Oklahoma in 2011 and Moscow in 2010 were a consequence of global warming…”

~ Hansen J., Sato M, Ruedy R. 2012. Perception of Climate Change. Proc Natl Acad Sci USA

    2. We are giving at least $11 BILLION in tax subsidies to fossil fuel companies, some of the wealthiest in the world, as we are simultaneously loosing our own homes.

    3. According to Mass DEP: Vehicle emissions account for about 40 percent of the pollutants that produce ground level ozone, a lung irritant and main ingredient in smog. Children are amongst the most vulnerable, with one out of every three school absences now attributed to asthma. Asthma is now the number one reason children are admitted to the hospital.

    4. Several viable and underutilized clean energy alternatives now exist, and in Massachusetts, clean energy sector jobs grew by 11.2 percent between July 2011 and July 2012. (It now generates over 70,000 local jobs.)

People are asking whether Occupy is “alive” or “dead” or “still happening”. Individuals are still organizing around the clock to strengthen our community. They will continue to no matter the name. The extent to which new people take it upon themselves to do so as well, and the extent to which we can work together, will directly determine wether the most critical issues of our time are dealt with in a prudent manner. Here is to “the radicals”. Happy Birthday Occupy Boston!

Horrific Results of New GMO Food Study Reveal Obama Has Abandoned FDA Regulation to Chemical Industry Profits

Increases in Tumors & Disease in Rats Fed GMO Food Discovered in First Long Term Peer Reviewed Study

WASHINGTON, DC – Occupy Monsanto, a decentralized network of food activists who organized 65 protests at GMO manufacturer Monsanto facilities across the globe this week, is calling on the Barack Obama Administration to clean house of appointed former Monsanto executives who intentionally ignore the serious health impacts of eating genetically engineered food due to their conflict of interest. A new GMO food study released today gives alarming evidence of GMO-induced lethal health complications in rats. The data casts an ominous shadow on the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) where imperative consumer regulation of GMOs is handled by former Monsanto executives. Read the new European GMO study at
    http://research.sustainablefoodtrust.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/Final-Paper.pdf

Occupy Boston and the Occupy Monsanto Do Wop Chorus will be meeting at 8:00 a.m. at the corner of Athenaeum and W. Kendall, Kendall Sq., Cambridge, on Sept. 24, 2012, to prepare to serenade the employees of the nearby Monsanto offices starting at 8:30 and continuing until we just can’t croon anymore. All welcome!

“Activists are renewing their push for the FDA to review the long term safety of GMO food prior to its introduction to the food supply,” says Occupy Monsanto spokesperson Gene Etic. “European researchers confirmed today rats fed GMO food developed tumors and other serious health problems at an alarming rate compared to the control group. It isn’t too soon to pull GMO’s out of the food supply based on today’s news. The FDA has an obligation to protect people from unhealthy food but as long as former Monsanto executive Michael Taylor is running food safety for Obama nothing will be done to protect Americans.”

Absent a new approach by the Obama Administration, the new study will fuel more GMO protests that are increasingly becoming disruptive as demonstrated last Wednesday, September 12, when activists calling themselves the
Genetic Crimes Unit (GCU) shut down shipping and receiving access points at Monsanto’s massive Oxnard, California GMO seed factory. By peacefully blockading the exit and access points at the factory, the group shut down the distribution of genetically engineered (GMO) seeds for a day.

“If the government refuses to stop the distribution of deadly GMO seeds in the food supply, more and more activists will engage in acts like last week that stopped GMO seed distribution for about 6 hours in the state of California,” says Ariel Vegosen who was arrested with 8 others in Oxnard and charged with trespassing.

Monsanto is the largest producer of GMO seeds. Actions officially started on September 17, a year since Occupy Wall Street movement began and took place throughout the world including the 45 protests in the US alone and many others in Germany, Canada, India, Paraguay, Philippines, Poland, Argentina, Australia, Spain, Russia, Peru and Japan. More info as well as video available for media use with credit of the GMO protests can be found at http://Occupy-Monsanto.com.

Proposals Passed During the 9 Sept 2012 General Assembly

    Helium Balloons for S17

$300 for printed ballons to be filled with helium for S17 in NYC.

Details: Red balloons with white lettering printed with the following four messages:

    1. YOU ARE NOT A LOAN
    2. DEBT
    3. WHO DO YOU OWE?

A means to inflate with helium will be figured out in NYC during S17. After subtracting the cost of helium, the remainder amount will be used to buy as many balloons as possible.

Proposed by Aria. Passed in the consent bucket.

    Livestream Equipment Funding

Using some of the funding previously allocated for the Tactical Proposal (for a new encampment) to replace missing/broken streaming gear in time for S17.

    Details:

    • Ballpark estimate amount: $400.
    • Using Tactical allocated funds for 2 hotspots which need to be replaced.
    • Because there will be more streamers than usual, 2 battery packs need to be purchased for S17.
    • 4 LiveStream mounts for streamers also need to be purchased to provide more stabilized, professional video.

Proposed by Rene of the Livestream WG. Passed in the consent bucket.
