    Another world is possible
  • Occupy May 1st- A Day Without the 99%

Worldwide, May 1st is traditionally a workers day – a day of labor solidarity and a public holiday. It’s a day to celebrate and march in support of immigrant rights, worker rights, and human rights. In protest against the corruption of the worldwide marketplace, which has led to illegal foreclosures, mass unemployment, low wages, high taxes and a penalization of all those who do not own the ‘99%’ of the world’s resources, and in solidarity with the immigrant movements of Massachusetts and the world, Occupy Boston is calling for a general strike on May Day.

On May 1st, Occupy Boston calls on the 99% to strike, skip work, walk out of school, and refrain from shopping, banking, and business for a day without the 99%.

    No work.

Take the day off. Strike. Call out sick. Small businesses are encouraged to close for the day and join the rest of the 99% in the streets. If you must work – don’t worry – we have actions planned from 7:00am to 8:00pm.

    No school.

Walk out of class. Occupy the universities. Kick out the administration. Participate in student strike actions or plan your own. It’s your future. Own it.

    Block the flow.

In the early hours of May 1st, the 99% will converge on Boston’s financial district for a full day of direct action. The “Financial District Block Party” will start at 7:00 am on the corner of Federal & Franklin Streets.

Banks and corporations are strongly encouraged to close down for the day.

    Be the crisis.

We ask the 99% to organize in their own neighborhoods, schools, and local centers of commerce. Communities, organizations, workplaces and families are encouraged to organize actions in whatever manner feels comfortable. Picket a “too big to fail” bank in your area. Hold a protest picnic in your town square. You are the one you’ve been waiting for!

    Everyone to the streets!

We call upon all of the 99% to join in this day of action to demand an end to corporate rule and a shift of power to the people. No work. No school. No chores. No shopping. No banking. Let’s show the 1% that we have the power. Let’s show the world a day without the 99%.

Occupy Boston Daily Digest for 4-28-12

    Good Morning from Occupy Boston!

Stories of the Day: The question we should be asking is not whether domestic caregiving is more or less important than wage work—they’re both crucial, and crucially different. The question is which women have the privilege of choice, because too often, decisions of work and home are made for them, without their consent. That gender gap in personal autonomy and freedom may be more detrimental to feminist struggles than economic or employment disparities. For more about What We Still Get Wrong About Women and Work, click here. And, hospital patients waiting in an emergency room or convalescing after surgery are being confronted by an unexpected visitor: a debt collector at bedside. This and other aggressive tactics by one of the nation’s largest collectors of medical debts, Accretive Health, were revealed on Tuesday by the Minnesota attorney general, raising concerns that such practices have become common at hospitals across the country. The tactics, like embedding debt collectors as employees in emergency rooms and demanding that patients pay before receiving treatment, were outlined in hundreds of company documents released by the Attorney General. For more, click here.  And, for more than a year, veterans groups and Senate Democrats have warned that for-profit colleges are aggressively recruiting current and former soldiers for their generous federal tuition benefits. President Barack Obama has signed an executive order aimed at rooting out unscrupulous sales tactics by schools seeking to capitalize on billions of dollars in higher education assistance for the military. For the story, click here. And: House Republicans recently proposed cuts to nutrition assistance that will kick 280,000 low-income children off automatic enrollment in the Free School Lunch and Breakfast Program. Those same kids and 1.5 million other people will also lose their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (formerly food stamp benefits) that help them afford food at home. Ten years’ worth of these nutrition cuts could be prevented for the price of one year of tax cuts on 3,340 multimillion dollar estates that House Republicans are protecting in their budget. For the story, click here. And some good news: as Greece wonders whether its debt crisis will eventually spell its exit from the euro, one town in the center of the country, Volos, has formed an alternative local currency. It works through a bartering system or exchange of goods. For more information (a short video news report), click here.

Other Occupies/Protests: Here’s one way women are protesting against the “War on Women,” for information on today’s Unite Against the War on Women Rally, see below. The scarlet letter “A” is an instantly recognizable symbol of excoriation and shame. A is For is a campaign challenging the traditional meaning of the scarlet letter by encouraging women, and the men who support them, to wear the A proudly. Women are waking up to the aggressive legislative assault on their health taking place in state houses and in Congress. It is an assault that threatens our physical freedom with a force unheard of in the last 40 years. With so-called “personhood” bills and a systematic campaign of dis-information, the overriding message we’re receiving is one we thought we’d overcome a long time ago: that women are too ignorant, too confused, too selfish and too thoughtless to be trusted with the control of our own bodies. We are taking back the A by re-appropriating it’s meaning to one of dignity, defiance, and autonomy. For more information, click here. And: each year, an ever-increasing number of men, women and their families are joining the award-winning Walk a Mile in Her Shoes®: The International Men’s March to Stop Rape, Sexual Assault & Gender Violence. A Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® Event is a playful opportunity for men to raise awareness in their community about the serious causes, effects and remediations to sexualized violence. For a brief video of the march, click here. And watch this great video message from a man who explains why he is a feminist.

Occupy’s Super Tuesday? Building on May Day Traditions

With class inequality reaching new heights and shaping politics in the U.S. and internationally, a new generation is discovering the importance of May Day and embracing its message of militant working class struggle and international solidarity.

This is the context for demonstrations planned for May 1 this year, organized by Occupy movement activists, along with labor unions, immigrant rights activists and antiwar organizations. Whatever the size and character of these protests, they represent an effort to connect activists in movements today with the rich traditions of working class struggle in the U.S.–with the goal of building a left alternative in a world dominated by the 1 percent.

Get Ready for May Day and Nationwide ‘General Strike’

Occupy Wall Street, in fact has already declared a victory. “While American corporate media has focused on yet another stale election between Wall Street-financed candidates, Occupy has been organizing something extraordinary: the first truly nationwide General Strike in U.S. history,” OWS’s website says. “Building on … past General Strikes in U.S. cities…, the national general strikes in Spain this year, and the on-going student strike in Quebec, the Occupy Movement has called for A Day Without the 99% on May 1st, 2012. This in and of itself is a tremendous victory. For the first time, workers, students, immigrants, and the unemployed from over 125 U.S. cities will stand together for economic justice.”

Occupy Hub Calls for NATO Protesters in Chicago

As Chicago ramps up for the NATO summit in May, at least one behind-the-scenes voice of the Occupy movement is calling for “31 magical days” culminating with “direct actions that paralyze capitalism” in cities worldwide.

The website Adbusters, considered a driving force of the Occupy movement as it gathered steam last year, called on thousands Friday to “take the plunge and strike” starting May 1.

In a post titled “The May 2012 Insurrection,” the group proposed actions ranging from blocking the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco to the occupation of a tunnel in Manhattan and the seizure of ports.

The General Assembly agrees to fund May First Coalition, InReach WG and approves changes in GA location, process and a special presentation

The following proposals were passed by Occupy Boston’s General Assembly on April 26, 2012:

    • That 90 minutes of General Assembly time on Saturday, May 12, 2012, should be used for a presentation to develop a common level of knowledge about the current financial crisis and what are the practical alternatives.  The presenters will be Gary Epstein, Professor of Economics at UMass Amherst, and Jim Campen, Professor of Economics at UMass Boston.
    • A $200 donation for the May First Coalition.
    • OJP proposes moving the Occupy Boston General Assembly scheduled for May 5 to the Southwest Corridor Park, location of the Wake Up the Earth Festival. Aria will get an exact location to Facilitators and as many email lists as possible within the next two days. If WUTE is rescheduled to May 6 because of rain–pending approval by SAA–SAA will move to WUTE. GA will discuss details and a topic during the regular meetings between now and May 5.
    • The InReach Working Group proposes to purchase a 1-inch button machine with parts for 2,000 buttons ($632) and reimburse members of InReach for expenses from the Open House ($64.27).  The $397.71 that is left from the Info Tent proposal will go to this purchase, meaning an additional sum of $298.56 will be allocated.  The machine will be the 1-inch button maker purchased in November by Bil Lewis along with remaining parts from the 2000 purchased at that time.
    • To create a “consent bucket,” which is a list of proposals that can be considered to address subjects around which a broad consensus can be reached.  Proposals would be grouped together in a bucket or package.  Initially all new proposals would be introduced as items in the “consent bucket.”  There would be no discussion about the proposals themselves beyond clarifying questions.  If any member felt that any proposal or proposals required discussion, it would be pulled out of the “bucket” and considered as part of the regular proposal process.  Members of the assembly should feel comfortable in expressing reservations about any part of the “consent bucket” and request assistance from fellow members if necessary.  The remaining items in the “consent bucket” would be adopted by unanimous vote.  The “consent bucket” would be considered after announcements and before the agenda.  If adopted this proposal will be implemented immediately.
