The latest issue of the Boston Occupier is out TODAY, Wednesday, April 18th. In this issue: exclusive interview with Noam Chomsky, “Camp Charlie” and the National Day of Action for Public Transportation, rallies for justice for Trayvon Martin, corporations abandoning ALEC, point/counter-point on occupier demands, May 1st, results of the haiku contest, new crossword puzzle, great poster for the General Strike, and more!!
We want to get out the word — all over Boston, and beyond — that our movement is growing, changing, and as urgent as ever. WE NEED HELP DISTRIBUTING all 10,000 copies of Issue #7!!! Here is the game-plan.
* Our BIG DISTRIBUTION PUSH is the Wednesday afternoon commute. WE NEED VOLUNTEERS!! We’ve found that the best strategy is actually to ride the T, moving from car to car, passing out papers to riders. This is especially appropriate because we have stories on “Camp Charlie,” Occupy MBTA, and the National Day of Action for Public Transportation. Volunteers should meet at 5 pm at “E5” (33 Harrison Ave, 5th floor, Boston). (If you can’t come until 5:30 or 6, that’s ok too.) It’s more fun to go out in pairs, so hopefully we’ll have enough volunteers to make that possible. So, come spread the Occupy news!
* Copies of the paper will be available for anyone and everyone to pick up, beginning at 2 pm on Wednesday in “E5” (33 Harrison Ave, 5th floor). They’ll be there all week! Please take a stack and commit to distributing them in your community (small stacks in cafes, libraries, bookshops, laundry mats, community centers, waiting rooms, campuses, etc).
* If you are a part of another local-area Occupy movement, a union, or a community organization that is willing to distribute papers — let’s make it happen! Send questions or suggestions about distribution to Julie O (juliettejulianna@gmail.com) — or, better yet, just pick up a big pile of papers from E5.
* Also available with this issue is our new subscription service, part of our effort to raise funds and make the Boston Occupier sustainable for the foreseeable future. Read about it online here. I hope you’ll encourage those you know to subscribe to the paper!

At yesterday’s Mass Tea Party Patriot’s rally on the Boston Common, a Boston police officer choked a member of Occupy Boston, who was there as part of a counter-protest organized by Occupy Boston’s Queer / Trans Direct Action Working Group and a loose coalition of LGBT and Anti-Fascist groups. Occupy Boston condemns this assault on one of our own and the First Amendment. We demand that Police Commissioner Evans suspend this officer while a full review is conducted to determine further disciplinary action. On April 17th, Occupy Boston will participate, along with many other groups, in a protest against the unfairness of the current tax regime, where people such as Mitt Romney pay at rates far lower than those earning far less, and Warren Buffet’s now-famous secretary pays at a higher rate than Warren Buffet. The Rally and March will begin at 5:30pm at Dewey Square (South Station) and the march will begin at 6pm and proceed through the city streets, pass by several notorious corporate tax dodgers, and end at Post Office Square. Things to bring: yourself (most important), signs, noise-making stuff (pots, pans, kazoos, whatever).

From Occupy to Revolution: The Importance of Keeping a Radical Perspective

Radical scholar, Marxist intellectual, and long-time social justice activist, Professor Barbara Foley (Rutgers-Newark) will be giving a short lecture and facilitating a discussion, under the working title : “From Occupy to Revolution: the importance of keeping a radical perspective” at Camp Charlie, between 10:30 and 11 am this Friday, April 13th at Camp Charlie.
Ride the Rails
4:00 PM at Camp Charlie
Come Ride the Rails with us to spread the word to Boston’s subway riders about Camp Charlie, the Occupy MBTA campaign, and the broader Occupy Boston community. We’ll be meeting at Camp Charlie at 4:00 PM for a brief training, after which we’ll be setting out in teams to connect with Boston’s rush-hour commuters and recruit them for the movement through speaking, leafleting, and distributing copies of the Boston Occupier. Let’s seize the unique opportunity to engage thousands of T commuters about the issues that could immediately impact them — the cuts, hikes, and layoffs — as well as the deeper issues that they raise for us all. Race and Class Inequality: Fighting for a People’s T

The recent fare hikes and proposed service cuts are only the most recent effort to divide public transit across race and class lines. Join us for a crash course on the history of the T — how urban planning choices changed its shape and layout, and how those choices affect the demographics it serves.
