Hear from victims of police brutality and meet activists who are fighting against racism in this city.

Monica James is a Black trans woman from Chicago who survived years of police abuse, including one brutal beating by a police officer in 2007. Through a community campaign, she successfully fought the 20-80 year sentence that followed, and has since been an inspiring activist in the Black Lives Matter Movement.

Carla Sheffield is the mother of Burrell Ramsey White who was murdered by the BPD in 2012. She has been an activist for justice for her son since he was killed.

Khury Petersen-Smith is a longtime anti-racist activist in Boston and member of the
International Socialist Organization. He has written on the Black Lives Matter movement and spoken from Boston to Australia about the movement’s significance.

Join SpeakOUT Boston and BAGLY for a reception and book signing with photographer Rachelle Lee Smith for her inspiring book Speaking OUT: Queer Youth in Focus. Smith’s book is a photographic essay that explores a wide spectrum of experiences of youth aged 14-24 who identify as queer. She’ll discuss her process and books will be available for sale. This is a multi-generational event so please bring your kids, your spouses, your friends, and elders! We’ll have a youth photo booth open to create personal statements in your own photo. Light food and refreshments.

Chelsea Manning’s Five Years Of Confinement

Taken into Army MP custody on May 27, 2010 and later held for months under torturous conditions at the Quantico Marine Base in Virginia, Chelsea Manning was tried and sentenced in a military court-martial at Fort Meade in Maryland to 35 years in August 2013 for releasing many military secrets through WikiLeaks about U.S. crimes in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan among other revelations. If this sentence stands she will be out in 2045.

We cannot let this happen — we have to get her out!

For the third year in a row, over 400 cities worldwide, from Seattle to Johannesburg, are organizing local events for the March Against Monsanto, and many expect to receive thousands in attendance. Our Boston event is in solidarity with this worldwide movement, and it is the second year we also host the Rally For World Food Justice on the same day. There were 1000 people in attendance at the 2014 March & Rally, and we hope to reach at least this same number in 2015.

The Boston organizing team is a small ad hoc group of activists from various groups and individuals coming together. We are seeking funding from individual community members through a crowdsourcing Indiegogo campaignand sponsorships from local businesses and organizations that align with our working definition of Food Justice (attached).

Locally in Boston, our goal is to incorporate a broad Food Justice mission into this event, highlighting its connection to economic, climate and racial justice and committing to prioritizing and putting front and center the voices and stories of our local communities, specifically those systemically affected by limited or no access, while maintaining an international perspective and solidarity. The Rally will feature teach-ins from community leaders, public speakers from across these movements, as well as local community musicians, and artists.

As in previous years, we plan for this to be a permitted family-friendly event.
