Today, Occupy Wall Street’s General Assembly voted to remain in Liberty Plaza rather than move out by Mayor Bloomberg’s deadline of Friday, October 14 at 7 am. They will nonviolently defend their occupation, as Occupy Boston did earlier this week, risking arrest in the process. Occupy Wall Street (OWS) issued the following statement:
Occupy Wall Street is gaining momentum, with occupation actions now happening in cities across the world.
But last night Mayor Bloomberg and the NYPD notified Occupy Wall Street participants about plans to “clean the park”—the site of the Wall Street protests—tomorrow starting at 7 am. “Cleaning” was used as a pretext to shut down “Bloombergville” a few months back, and to shut down peaceful occupations elsewhere.
Bloomberg says that the park will be open for public usage following the cleaning, but with a notable caveat: Occupy Wall Street participants must follow the “rules.”
This is it—this is their attempt to shut down #OWS for good.
PLEASE TAKE ACTION
1) Call 311 (or +1 (212) NEW-YORK if you’re out of town) and tell Bloomberg to support our right to assemble and to not interfere with #OWS.
2) Come to #OWS TONIGHT AT MIDNIGHT to defend the occupation from eviction.
For those of you who plan to help us hold our ground—which we hope will be all of you—make sure you understand the possible consequences. Be prepared to not get much sleep. Be prepared for possible arrest. Make sure your items are together and ready to go (or already out of the park). We are pursuing all possible strategies; this is a message of solidarity.
Occupy Wall Street is committed to keeping the park clean and safe—we even have a Sanitation Working Group whose purpose this is. We are organizing major cleaning operations today and will do so regularly.
If Bloomberg truly cares about sanitation here he should support the installation of portopans and dumpsters. #OWS allies have been working to secure these things to support our efforts.
We know where the real dirt is: on Wall Street. Billionaire Bloomberg is beholden to bankers.
We won’t allow Bloomberg and the NYPD to foreclose our occupation. This is an occupation, not a permitted picnic.
In addition to taking the above steps, individual members of Occupy Wall Street have also asked us to circulate this petition to stop Mayor Bloomberg from evicting them from Liberty Plaza.
Occupy Boston stands in solidarity with our sisters and brothers in New York during their time of need, as they did in ours. We are the 99%, and we stand united.

filling out job applications while protesting and not attending a nice state school right?
I’m afraid that I don’t follow.
Brookfield Office Properties (the Canadian real estate corporation that is apparently pushing the city government in NYC to clear Liberty Plaza of occupy wall street protesters) apparently owns or manages the skyscrapers at 53 and 75 State Street in Downtown Boston; and a member of its corporate board is also a Citibank executive named William T. Cahill. (See following link for more info about Brookfield Office Properties’s Boston portfolio)

i mean that the average joe has no sympathy for these guys. we are too busy busting our butts working. we knew we couldnt afford these elite high tuition schools so we all attended state schools which are far less expensive. if we chose not to go to a college then we found a job elsewhere. we havent become upset with the 1% because the 1% keeps us employed. we arent upset with the police becuase we pull permits and pay for any detail police officers. afterall i could crap in the middle of the street not say a word and it would still be peaceful right? the 98.5% is pretty content. please guys just go away youre taking up some pretty nice park space that my kids and i cant enjoy.
I went to a small state school for college, where I had a full scholarship for the last three years, and I had a full scholarship for grad school.
As for the park, there are 16 acres of the Greenway that Occupy Boston isn’t using and that you and your kids are perfectly free to enjoy. (Though I somehow doubt you’ve actually ever bothered visiting them.)
I can’t speak for “John Doe” but I actually go onto the greenway each day and It really doesn’t matter if there are 16 acres that are not being used. You guys are using a park which cost millions of dollars to restore after the central artery was removed and you all are using it as a campground which is not what it is made for. Its for people to walk through, and to enjoy as a park, not a campsite or the headquarters for a protest. You complain that Bloomberg is concerned for sanitation and safety but that he wont provide dumpsters or portable toilets. Why should he or the city of New York? Thats more money that would cost the tax payers, on top of all the extra pay for the special police duties and all the lag in business that your organization creates. You guys hide behind the violence shield which is just pathetic. You all are not peaceful. Your gathering in masses screaming about revolt and taking over public property, claiming it as your right. Well I have the right to use that exact spot of land you are using for what ever I want right? So by not allowing me to walk with my family through that park, your technically violating my rights. Protest all you want, but do it elsewhere.
This is a strange comment. Go down to the camp and you will find it chock full of people who (a) went to state schools (b) didn’t go to college (c) work hard and pay their bills (d) worked hard and paid their bills until they lost their jobs, etc.
The 1% might keep you employed for now but it’s sure not keeping all sorts of other people employed.
It’s also strange to think the 1% should control the country simply because they own a bunch of businesses. You are in the 99%, right? Don’t you care about the other people in the 99%?
have you been to Dewey Sq. and talked to anyone?
The 98.5% is pretty content? Are you OK with richer people than you not paying the same % that you do in taxes? And corporations owning your elected officials? And you’re fine with private healthcare paid for by healthy working people, who also pay the taxes that cover the healthcare expenses of the elderly/veterans/disabled? And you’re also ok with unending wars that are paid for on credit?
How about the fraudsters who sold mortgage-backed securities to our retirement funds, knowing they were steaming piles of sewage, and making $$$ by betting against them at the same time?
That’s all OK because the 1% keeps us employed? Have you looked at unemployment figures lately? How high does unemployment have to go before you no longer think they ‘keep us employed’?
“Are you OK with richer people than you not paying the same % that you do in taxes?” YES i AM THESE PEOPLE ARE THE ONES TAKING THE RISKS STARTING THE SMALL BUSINESS AND OR RUNNING THE LARGE CORPERATIONS. tHEY EMPLOY MOST OF THE WORKING AMERICANS.
“And corporations owning your elected officials?” HOW MANY ELECTED OFFICIALS DOES GEORGE SOROS OWN? HOW MUCH HAS HE CONTRIBUTED TO THE OCCUPY MOVEMENT.
That’s all OK because the 1% keeps us employed? Have you looked at unemployment figures lately? How high does unemployment have to go before you no longer think they ‘keep us employed’? mAYBE WE SHOULD CUT GOVERNMENT SPENDING SHOW THE WORLD AND OURSELVES THAT WE
ARE SMART ENOUGH NOT TO SPEND WHAT WE DONT HAVE. rEMBER OBAMA TALKING ABOUT TAKING FEWER VACATIONS OR NOT BUYING BOATS IF YOU CAN’T AFFORD IT? THEN HE BUYS 2 MULTI MILLION TOUR BUSSES
How about the fraudsters who sold mortgage-backed securities to our retirement funds, knowing they were steaming piles of sewage, and making $$$ by betting against them at the same time? hOW ABOUT OCCUPYING BARNEY FRANKS YARD HE DID A GREAT JOB HELPING THE BANKS PROVIDE MORTAGAGES
And you’re also ok with unending wars that are paid for on credit? NOT AN IDEAL SITUATION BUT NEITHER WAS 9/11 IN A PERFECT WORLD WE WOULD BE OUT BY NOW. UNFORTUNATLEY NOT PERFECT WE GOT A BUNCH OF MORONS CAMPING OUT IN DOWNTOWN BOSTON
“And you’re fine with private healthcare paid for by healthy working people, who also pay the taxes that cover the healthcare expenses of the elderly/veterans/disabled?” IF WE DON’T PAY IT WHO WILL? I HOPE YOU WERE NOT GOING TO SAY THE GOVERNMENT.
You mean you choose to be complacent to the inequities that fuel the majority of the developed world, living off the back of others. Busting your butt? Perhaps you should look into the labor practices involved in the production of your consumption routine.
tell Bloomberg to support our right to assemble and to not interfere with #OWS.

I wish Move On was not the sponsor of the petition. It makes the protest look like it is just occupying the same niches that exist in electoral politics.
The protest is much deeper and broader than these niches, as far as I can tell.
Sure, I’ll sign it because I support this entirely and see it as a completely reasonable and necessary thing. I only think it would be better to use political tools that show that the protest is not merely an arm of established progressive institutions, even well-meaning ones.
The reason why there is a need for dumpsters and portapoties is because your cramming thousands of people into a park and treating it like a campground. Its not a campground. You guys should move the protests to some really cool club house. Not on beautiful parks built for people to enjoy as parks, not for people to gather and destroy the land. Anchors in our society. Do some pro bono work, improve the infrastructure and the economy will improve regardless of who protests and who is in office.
Do you mean work on a bridge or highway in a pro bono way? That sounds a little unrealistic!
Absolutely its realistic. Go up to VT and help them rebuild all the bridges that collapsed during Irene. But that wasn’t what I meant. Notice the comma. Find pro bono work, and improve the infrastructure. If your able to accept working for less while accepting to put more back into the society, you will eventually want less and give more. As of now, it seems as though that you all want more and want to give less. A selfish approach to a protest.
south boston has plenty of vacant lots-some with water views
nope dont care if some kid in china is poor. as long as i can get my sneakers at a good price. without capitalism none of us would be blessed enough to enjopy the things that 99.5% of americans enjoy. i belive a guy named lennin had some similiar ideals..howd that work out? aaaaaaand yes born and raised in boston have enjoyed our public parks for years. yes hyde park is a part of boston. cambridge, newton and brookline are not. that is all. good evening. try to stay dry in that publicaly traded rain gear.
ps you recieved a scholarship?!?!?!?!?! you were an elite?!?!?!? surely you couldnt accept it? there were other people paying full price! we had to pay a higher rate to cover your ass because you personally accepted a scholarship. gee thanks a lot.
Scholarships are not taken out of other people’s tuition.
Someone donated money to the university specifically for scholarships. Honestly, why do I even bother?
Exactly…we need better use of organizers’ time…please…
Can you please answer this. What more is being done to mobilize supporters who can not participate in person? It seems like NY is getting organized with petitions, call to action, online campaigns of support.
Thank you.
so you had to rely on wealthy people to donate money? such shame. going against your own message
money comes from somewhere homes…ok lets say donations…easily could go towards tuition reduction for the whole. doesnt matter how you split it. it came from somewhere. hypocrites
I came across this on the Occupy Wall Street Forum page tonight. If you know there is something so deeply wrong in this world and more and more you are feeling that government, politics, economics, party divisions, class warfare, etc. etc. are dividing us, not bringing us closer….please watch. I am so happy I did. This really helps you understand. We all need to be reminded from time to time.

Hey all. I’m sure people have already consulted this, but I figure it’s important enough to bring up again. http://www.forbes.com/forbes-400/#p_1_s_arank_All%20industries_All%20states_All%20categories_ <- that's a list of the 400 wealthiest americans, what city they live in and what industry they work for. I say we start methodically black listing the businesses and products they represent.
GREAT IDEA NOW GET OFF YOUR COMPUTER “BILL GATES” TURN YOUR IPOD OFF THE LATE “STEVE JOBS” HAVE THE OCCUPY GROUPS GIVE BACK THE MONEY FROM NYCC THAT WAS DONATED TO THEM FROM “GEORGE SOROS” SHOULD I KEEP GOING OR DO YOU GET THE IDEA.
watch wellaware1.com for more soros connections
The Occupy movements have gotten peoples attention. As a matter of fact, NYTimes / CBS polls indicate that people approve of Occupy movements at a rate of about 2 to 1 while they DISAGREE with the Tea Party at the same 2 to 1 ratio! Good for you!
Now it’s time to start putting a finer point on what you’re doing. Start talking about and issuing releases about some specific things like usury banking practices, corporate control of congress….. Whatever…… and Stop making every release about police brutality like it’s been since Tuesday morning here in Boston.
You can make this thing solely about your right to occupy if you want to, but that’s not going to accomplish your goals of reform.
Looks like, as of 6:45am Friday, a debacle in New York has been averted as Brookfield Properties has backed down from requesting police assistance to clear the park. They say they’ll work with the protesters for the time being to assure sanitation, etc, in the park.
Another victory! Now, Bostonians, take this and run with it – no more long screeds about police brutality or your right to occupy – FOCUS ON SOME ISSUES AND RALLY SUPPORT AROUND YOU!
(Someone wrote on the OWS blog that, “Fox and Friends haver never hated the First Amendment as much as they do this morning.”) Don’t waste this opportunity!
Sitting in a tent in the rain does not make you a hero. Sorry people.
I thought the gen Y kids were whiny. You put them to shame.
Just a little humour – “The Real Wall Street Crooks”

And on a serious note – I am with Paul on this one OccupyBoston:
DON’T WASTE THIS OPPORTUNITY ! The win this morning at Zuccotti Park is because they are organized. I was one of 300,000 people who signed the online petition you posted above. I’d like a CALL TO ACTION on the home page every day! Let’s see if you are capable of mobilizing a larger number OccupyBoston. We are the 99% afterall…
I’m surprised so many of the protesters are still able to comment after their call to boycott corporations/industries run by the wealthiest 400 Americans. If you are using an Apple product (iPad, MacBook, iPhone, etc.), please stop, or you are going against your own movement. If you use Google or Facebook or Twitter to expand your support, please stop, as you are also going against your own movement. If you are wearing shoes, please remove them. If you are planning any concerts that involve electrical equipment, please cancel, as just about all of the equipment is manufactured by horrible corporations.
Should you choose to continue using these products/services, please remove yourself from this movement, and join the “I am a hypocrite” club.
very naive…this movement is not about boycotting what helps the movement grow. what ? are we going to live in a bubble? our movement is not against corporate profits it is about how those profits are shared mostly with the 1% instead of the 99% of the employees of each corporation. you are very silly – please don’t blog as a supporter with comments like these…
Why should profits be shared? I thought the shareholders who put their capital at risk got the profits?
Clearly, I am not blogging as a supporter. If you are unhappy with the way the profits are shared, do not work for that company – work for a corporation that does not attempt to make money for its shareholders. If you are unhappy with the sharing of profits, become a shareholder! There is a website, http://www.sharebuilder.com, that allows people to buy very small share amounts at a time – it is designed to get people of all income levels involved!
I do understand profits are shared with shareholders. Here is what I have a problem with – news like these below and how profits are shared with employees vs. execs. Failing executives get obscene ‘golden parachutes’ while regular employees have their merit increases frozen or even worse get laid off. I think a few millions shaved off that CEOs severance package could have kept those 500 people employed. The fine line of decency has been crossed and you can’t convince me otherwise. I do care to hear what you have in response to the topic of executive pay. They get paid way over the value they bring to the table. Much like for ballplayers, actors, etc GREED has no limit – to the point that middle class Americans can’t take their kids to a ballgame or a concert because they have to make choices between that and heating their homes and putting food on the table.
The “reduction in workforce” telegraphed by HP a few weeks ago appears to finally be taking place…. (500) jobs are reportedly moving to Shanghai and Yehud, Israel….

When are the citizens of Boston going to Occupy “Occupy Boston” and demand the end of our tax dollars being used to support and manage these drifters?
i want them all arrested now for not pulling a permit. they just dont get it. they are totally illegal. much like the border corssers. arrest them all. i hope they catch pneumonia.
