Rape has been used as a way of punishment/revenge on Dalit women for a long time but the recent incidents of the heinous crime in the state of Haryana (India), with close to 19 rapes reported in the month of September alone, makes it imperative to seek answers and actions. This panel intends to look for answers behind this increased victimization of women, especially Dalit women, in Haryana and will endeavor to formulate some practical responses.

One Response to “Caste, Class and Sexual Violence in India”
As you know, most of the people of all communities (Bengali/Tamil) in this sub-continent are covered by ‘Culture of Poverty’ (Oscar Lewis), irrespective of class, dwells in pavement or apartment. Here material poverty is a less important issue. If we seriously desire for a corruption-free society with decent Politics, has to place genuine commitment in our own mindset. We are not at all ashamed of the deep-rooted corruption, decaying quality of life, bad Politics, poor work place, weak mother language, non-stop erosion of Common Social Space. We use to become parents only by self-procreation (animal instinct supported by cheap consumerism) deliberately deprive the fundamental rights of a caring society, fearless & dignified living, those are being born. Never, ever consider alternative, positive values/passionate parenthood – stop giving birth to any child till the society improves fundamentally, co-parenting children those are born within extreme poverty or ignorance, instead. If freedom is desired from vicious cycle of poverty, nasty pollution need to deviate our lifestyle a little and induce some hope inside, start a movement of ‘Production of Space’(Henri Lefebvre), good & competent Politics would certainly come up. Howrah.
